StoryFest 2022: Writers’ Workshop with David Heti

November 5 @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm

No, Seriously! Comedy Writing.

You might laugh, but this five-hour immersion (with breaks) will be a combination of theory and workshopping. The goal is for the participants to deepen their appreciation of humour, learn how better to transfer their own sense of humour to the page, and in general become stronger, more confident, nuanced, discerning and just plain funnier writers no matter what their writing genre or level of experience.

Beginning with a survey of classic theories of humour examining the essence of the comedic, the workshop will then take a critical analysis of several exemplary comedic works across various literary forms. Time will then be spent on in-class writing (and re-writing) exercises, as well as a discussion of general comedy writing strategies and approaches. Students are encouraged to bring along any pieces of writing they are working on, but this is by no means essential.

David Heti is a stand-up comic and humour writer who has toured throughout North America, released two comedy albums, and written for the CBC and The Comedy Network. He teaches comedy writing at McGill and Toronto’s Flying Books School of Reading and Writing. He also holds degrees in Philosophy and Law.

The workshop takes place at Greenwood and includes a light lunch. Space is limited.

Tickets are $80.00 each and can be purchased electronically here. If you would like to buy this ticket as a cash transaction, please contact us at: history@greenwoodcentre.org or 450-458-5396.
